Robert Buckley Farlee is a musician and pastor living in Minneapolis. In 2017 he retired from a position as Senior Editor for Worship at Augsburg Fortress (1517 Media), where he had worked extensively on the preparation of the Evangelical Lutheran Worship constellation of resources, as well as editing Sundays and Seasons and Sunday and Seasons: Preaching for a number of years. He also oversaw publication of music resources, and edited works such as Leading the Church’s Song, Honoring Our Neighbor’s Faith, and Gail Ramshaw’s More Days for Praise and Pray, Praise, and Give Thanks.
Farlee continues his work as one of the cantors at Christ Church Lutheran, Minneapolis, where he also served as a pastor on staff for 15 years. One of his vocations is as a composer for the church. He has composed and published hundreds of works for assembly, choir, organ and other instruments, and orchestra. He may be best known as a writer of hymn tunes, including BERGLUND for Susan Palo Cherwien’s text “O Blessed Spring” and NELSON for “Holy God, Holy and Glorious” by Susan Briehl.
An active member of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, Farlee has served as president of that organization and three times as worship chair for its biennial conferences. He is also a member of the Liturgical Language Seminar of the North American Academy of Liturgy, and served for eight years on the Advisory Council of the Institute for Liturgical Studies. He has been awarded the Raabe Prize for Sacred Composition by ALCM, and a Distinguished Alumni award by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
